How Golf Balls Are Made: The 13-Step Manufacturing Process

A comprehensive technical walkthrough of how XJTGOLF transforms raw synthetic rubber, DuPont Surlyn ionomers, and thermoset cast polyurethane into tournament-caliber golf balls inside our Dongguan manufacturing plant.

Industrial Execution

The 13 Stages of Production

Every production batch adheres to rigorous thermal, mechanical, and aerodynamic parameters.

01
Raw Material Preparation

Polybutadiene Rubber Compounding

The foundation of high ball speed begins in our internal Banbury mixer. High-cis (≥ 96%) polybutadiene rubber is mixed with zinc diacrylate (ZDA) as a co-agent, zinc oxide for density calibration, and organic peroxide initiators. The exact ratio determines the coefficient of restitution (COR) and overall compression.

Key Parameters: 96% High-cis Polybutadiene · Banbury mixing temp: 100°C–115°C
02
Thermal Cross-Linking

High-Pressure Hydraulic Core Vulcanization

The compounded rubber is extruded into cylindrical slugs and loaded into multi-cavity hemispherical steel molds. Multi-ton hydraulic presses apply 150 tons of clamping pressure at 150°C to 180°C for 15 to 20 minutes, vulcanizing the rubber into an ultra-resilient solid spherical core.

Key Parameters: 150°C–180°C curing temp · 150-ton hydraulic clamp · Compression tuning: 50–105 Atti
03
Mechanical Shaping

Centerless Spherical Grinding

After demolding, cores possess minor mold parting flash lines. They are fed through precision centerless cylindrical grinding machines where rotating diamond abrasive wheels grind the cores to perfect sphericity with a tolerance of ±0.001 inch.

Key Parameters: Grinding tolerance: ±0.025 mm (±0.001 in) · 100% spherical roundness check
04
Multi-Piece Architecture

Intermediate Mantle Layer Injection

In 3-piece and 4-piece tour designs, the ground core is placed in specialized retractable pin injection molds. High-flexural-modulus ionomer resin (Surlyn) is injected around the core to form an intermediate mantle that regulates driver spin reduction and energy transfer.

Key Parameters: Retractable pin mold design · Mantle wall thickness: 1.0mm–1.5mm
05
Outer Cover Molding

Cast Polyurethane or DuPont Surlyn Cover Application

Depending on the ball's performance class:
• Tour Class (Cast Urethane): Two liquid polyurethane prepolymers are metered and injected into heated mold cups where a chemical reaction forms a micro-thin 0.6mm thermoset cover.
• Distance & Range Class (Surlyn): Thermoplastic ionomer resin is high-pressure injected into CNC dimple cavities.

Key Parameters: 0.6mm cast urethane thickness (58 Shore D) or 1.2mm Surlyn (65 Shore D)
06
Aerodynamic Forming

Precision CNC Dimple Tooling

The mold cavity imparts our aerodynamic dimple patterns (332, 392, or 432 tetrahedral and icosahedral dimple arrangements). The dimples create a turbulent boundary layer of air around the ball in flight, dramatically reducing aerodynamic drag and generating aerodynamic lift.

Dimple Configurations: 332 (low drag penetrator), 392 (tour apex), 432 (soft floating descent)
07
Automated De-Flashing

Equatorial Seam Trimming & Buffing

High-speed rotary trimming arms mechanically slice away excess seam flash from the parting line between the two mold hemispheres. Automated buffing wheels ensure the seam is aerodynamically seamless.

08
Surface Activation

Corona Surface Discharge Pre-Treatment

Raw polymer covers possess low surface energy, causing ink and paint to bead or peel off. We pass balls through an electrical corona ionization tunnel that oxidizes the surface molecules, raising surface tension for permanent ink bonding.

09
Visual Branding

Robotic Multi-Color Pad Printing

Automated pad printing machines utilize contoured silicone pads that pick up ink from etched steel cliché plates and transfer it into the curved dimple depressions with zero distortion. Accommodates up to 5 spot PMS colors, side stamp alignment markings, and player numbers.

10
Novelty Graphics

360° Heat Shrink Film Wrap (Novelty Series)

For novelty lines (sports balls, emoji graphics, tire tread patterns), balls enter heat-shrink thermal chambers where pre-printed sublimation film encapsulates the entire sphere without seams or wrinkles.

11
Protective Finishing

Anti-UV Polyurethane Clear Coating

Balls are rotated on automated spindle conveyers inside positive-pressure cleanrooms. Dual robotic electrostatic spray nozzles apply a 15–20 micron clear coat containing UV blockers, followed by infrared tunnel baking to prevent yellowing in sunlight.

12
Laboratory Verification

Pneumatic Cannon & COR Quality Certification

Sample balls from each lot are fired via pneumatic air cannons at 125 mph against hardened steel targets for 100 cycles to evaluate scuff resistance, core cracking, and delamination. High-speed optical gates measure initial velocity to guarantee compliance.

13
Packaging & Dispatch

Optical Sorting, Sleeving & Master Packing

Finished balls undergo automated electronic check-weighing (45.93g max) and laser diameter sizing (42.67mm min). Approved balls are packaged into 3-ball sleeves, 12-ball dozen boxes, or heavy export master cartons with moisture barrier liners.
